Dkhar, Lyngdoh file nominations for Chairman post

Dkhar, who filed his nominations as the candidate of the ruling Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA), will be contesting against opposition People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MDC from Mawkyrwat Hadrian Lyngdoh.

Both filed their nominations before the Legislative Secretary of the KHADC on Monday.

Dkhar, also a three-time MDC and a former Deputy Chief Executive Member (Dy.CEM), has never changed his party despite in the absence of anti-defection law, unlike others who frequently changed their political party.

He was first elected in 2004 and continued to win in 2009 and 2014 district council elections from the UDP.

Speaking to reporters, Dkhar expressed confidence that he would come out successfully in the election.

“It was a walk over in the last two elections to the post of Chief Executive Member and Deputy Chairman as candidates from the other side abstained from the elections. I am confident that I will win this election,” Dkhar said.

When asked if he also expected a ‘walk over’ for him on Tuesday, Dkhar said, “it is up to the opposition to decide whether they again wanted to abstain from the election to the post of Chairman.”

“We are ready to face the election, and we are confident of winning,” Dkhar said.

The coalition KHDA has 17 members in the 29-member House, whereas the opposition PDA has only 12 members.

Earlier, the opposition PDA which comprises of 8 PDF and 4 Congress, had abstained from participating in the recently held elections to the post of CEM and Deputy Chairman of the Council.
