‘Drugs & alcohol linked to society’s safety’

SHILLONG, APR 16: East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal was of the opinion that increasing problems relating to alcohol and drug is also linked to safety of a society and informed that the district administration and police have decided to involve the youth as ‘partners’ in controlling crimes in the district.

Goyal said drugs and alcohol leads to cases of theft and other crimes even as he informed that drugs are being sold by criminals who tries to push it through youngsters for the purchase of guns and use it against the nation and the state.

Goyal said these during his  address to the students at the awareness programme on ‘Drug Abuse, Traffic Rules & Cyber Crime’ as a part of ‘Safe-Secure-Shillong Project’ organized by the East Khasi Hills District Police at Dinam Hall in  Jaiaw on Thursday.

Stating that the use of alcohol destroys the family and society as a whole, Goyal said, “We want to sensitize the students about this important aspect and make them partners for achieving a safe and secure society, state and nation.”

In relation to cyber crime, Goyal said many people from the state, especially Shillong, have been duped by cyber frauds despite advisories circulated by the SP.

“This is a big racket and it has direct connection with the security of the city, state and nation,” Goyal said while appealing to the students to be extra-careful while making friends in the internet.

Goyal also urged the schools to take up project in creating awareness on this issue adding that the students should be the torch bearers of everything which is good and not to be law breakers.

In his address, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang expressed concern over the increasing crimes related to drugs abuse in the city. He said, “Now even school students have fallen prey to drugs.”

Kharkhrang said there has been substantial increase intake of drugs that has direct connection to the crimes specially related to property (theft, robbery, bugglary and dacoity)”.

Kharkhrang informed that 18.75 per cent of the arrested persons are illiterate and 37.50 per cent are drop out.

Kharkhrang  further informed that the total cases reported under NPDS Act during 2009-2014 in East Khasi hills district 55 and 63 people were arrested under the NPDS Act from 2010-2014.

Kharkhrang, however, said even though many arrest have been made but a lot still needs to be done as far as tackling the problem of drug use and trafficking of drugs into the state is concerned.- By Our Reporter
