SHILLONG, AUG 9: A city-based rock band ‘Dymbur’- was crowned the ‘Meghalaya Icon V’ in the musical competition held as part of the government’s initiatives to create awareness on HIV/AIDS through music and promoting local talents.

The other bands- ‘Empirical Tribe’ and ‘Sky Level’- were crowned the first and second runners-up respectively.

Dymbur, the title winners of Meghalaya Icon V 2014, received a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh while the bands Empirical Tribe and Sky Level received cash award of Rs.30,000 & Rs.20,000 respectively apart from the special gifts.

Organized by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), this years’ Meghalaya Icon V winner will be the brand ambassadors for MACS. The band will be participating and travelling in all the  awareness campaigns of MACS across the state on HIV/AIDS.

MACS officials said the event has been held for the past five years in a row aiming to showcase local musical talents and also to enhance and increase the youths understanding on the subject of HIV/AIDS.
MACS claimed to have successfully achieved  its objectives in spreading awareness and sensitizing the public especially the youth on HIV & AIDS and on the production of a high quality event for the last two years.

Altogether 11 bands from different districts competed against each other at the grand finale of the event here. United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Jemino Mawthoh, who is also Member of Meghalaya Legislators’ Forum on HIV&AIDS distributed prizes to the title winners.- By Our Reporter
