Election machinery intensifying war on drugs in Meghalaya, Rs 33 crore contraband seized

SHILLONG, FEB 27: The war on drugs has been intensified in view of the model code of conduct enforcement in the state, chief electoral officer FR Kharkongor said on Monday.

 

He informed that a record amount of drugs worth over Rs 33.25 crore was seized as on February 26, the total seizure of which stands at Rs 74.18 crore.

 

According to him, this is a great contribution of the election machinery towards fighting against the drug menace in the state.

 

Kharkongor said this time the seizures made in Meghalaya were almost 20 times higher than the previous years.

 

In 2018, the total seizure was only 1.15 crore.

 

He said of Rs 74.18 crore, cash worth over Rs 8.71 crore, liquor of Rs 2.26 crore, precious metals like gold at Rs 91 lakh, freebies at Rs 28.69 crore were seized from across the state.
