Festival of light illuminates Shillong

Shillong, Nov 13: Psychedelic lights, illuminating rockets, burst of crackers and long queues for sweets marked the celebration of Kali Puja and Deepawali in Shillong city Tuesday as people cutting across communities burst crackers with gleeful children an integral part of the cracker busting festival.

Business establishments in the city centre, temples and community puja pandals were decorated with illuminating and bold lights to mark the festival of lights. Those celebrating the Deepawali offered their obeisance to Goddess Kali in various pandals.

Many people mostly children with elders in tow were seen crowding the makeshift stalls in many localities selling crackers, bombs and rockets. Even as the elders’ complaint of the spiraling prices of the crackers they, nonetheless, took out wads of notes, egged on by their wards, and bought bundles of different shapes and size of crackers.

Many homes of the Hindus were decorated with lights of different colour and shapes and the traditional diyas were seen flickering providing an ambience of festivity. Some of the houses were decorated with fresh marigold flower.

Deepawali was also celebrated in the Ramakrishna Mission, where the monks ‘sacrifice’ pumpkins in front of the idol of the goddess. “The idea is to give up all negative traits,” explained one of the saffron-clad monks.

Sweet shops like Delhi Mistan, Unique and others were overflowing with people who had to wait for longtime to get their gift packet of sweets so that they can present it to their near and dears. Some had already ordered the sweet a day ahead knowing that they might not get the sweet they want on Deepawali day.:- By Our Reporter
