Fifty power projects

SHILLONG, JUNE 9: As many as 50 mini and Micro Hydel Power Projects have been identified in the different districts of Meghalaya, a power starved state aiming at meeting the power requirement of the state. “The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) have identified nine mini and micro hydel power projects with the potential of producing 13.06 Mega Watt (MW) out of which three are commissioned and one is under construction,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma informed during the Question Hour in the Assembly here on Monday.

The projects which were already commissioned include Sonapani on Wahumkhra-Umshyrpi river (East Khasi Hills District) of 1.5 MW, Pashyiang Micro HEP on Barim river of 0.04MW (East Khasi Hills District) and Umsaw Micro HEP on Umsaw river of 0.02MW in Jaintia Hills, he said.

He said, the Lakhroh Micro HEP of 1.5 MW on Lakhroh river in Jaintia Hills, which was sanctioned way back in 2007 is under construction.

Replying to a query by Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy, Sangma said, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has identified 37 mini and micro hydel projects with the potential of producing up to 8444 kilowatt (KW) of power supply.

The projects identified by MNRE include 11 are in West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and East Garo Hills District, 8 are in East Khasi Hills District, 3 in Ri Bhoi District, 9 in West Khasi Hills District and 6 in Jaintia Hills District.

“Out of 37 projects, the detailed project reports of 6 are completed and one is under survey and investigation,” he said.

He further informed that there are also four such projects which have been identified by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), out of which the detailed project reports of three are completed and one is under survey and investigation.- By Our Reporter

      Because electricity cannot be stored. Once generated it has to be transmitted and used otherwise it becomes a waste. It may be sold during peak season as part of a power swap deal where power imported during off peak season is returned during peak season. Complicated business really.

    O like that? which means we don’t need to buy power, we just need to have a seasonal swap deal!!! really complicated indeed

    Yea it’s like that but we have to buy more than we can generate which makes it a complicated business buying at higher rates and selling at lower rates.
