GNLA leader surrenders

SHILLONG, NOV 19: A top leader of the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Thursday surrendered before the Meghalaya police saying he was disappointed at the style of functioning of the outfit’s leader Sohan D Shira, who allegedly tried to make GNLA as a ‘clan outfit’.

Rakirak G Momin alias Jarek, who is the Deputy Area Commander of Tura area, West Garo Hills district surrendered without arms before Tura police, Inspector General of Police (Operation) GHP Raju said on Thursday.

According to him, his surrendering also came following the continuous operations by the police during the last few weeks.

“He (Rakirak) disclosed to police that he got disillusioned with Sohan D Shira and his leadership. He accused Sohan of making GNLA his personal business for his own benefit and for the benefit of his relatives. He blamed Sohan D Shira for failure of Achik movement,” Raju said.

He said, “Rikirak told police that he would preferred to sit in jail than starving in the jungles with GNLA under Sohan.”

During interrogation, Rikirak also accused Sohan of favouring other cadres of GNLA from his own clan.

“He said that Rakkam, who is the finance secretary is also from D Shira clan,” the IGP said adding “Also, he alleged that Rakban D Shira alias Piliport of North Garo Hills Command is pampered and upgraded to Area Commander post even though other committed cadres are available.”

“Rikirak also repented for wasting three precious years of his youth in GNLA roaming in Durama jungles hoping that Sohan would work for separate Garo state,” Raju informed.

Rikrak said he is happy that Ada (brother) Darwin and Dalton have surrendered to police and leading are respectable life.

Rikrak joined GNLA in 2013 and belong to the 4th batch. He had undergone training in Adugre general camp. After training he was made part of Baichung command for Tura area.-By Our Reporter
