SHILLONG, NOV 19: Employees of a privately run institution in the city formally launched an organization christened as the Nazareth Hospital Workers’ Union (NHWU) which seeks to safeguard their rights.

“The NHWU is the first of its kind to be formed in a private hospital here in Meghalaya,” NHWU president Kenneth Swer told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.

Swer said that the union was formed after due consultation with various employees on the legal perspective of the body and has been registered with the Labour department of the state government.

Stating that the union seeks to unite the employees, he said, “All categories of employees including nurses working in the hospital are welcomed to be part of the union.” According to him, there are around 140 employees who are members of the NHWU. At present, the hospital is having the strength of around 500-600.

Highlighting on the objective of the union, NHWU general secretary Silvester Iangrai said, “Through the NHWU, we seek to foster unity among the workers, remove their grievances and protect them from exploitation by the management besides injustices.”

He said the union also aims at raising the standard of efficiency of the staffs, social security, infuse the spirit of good citizenship and to stand up for their rights. Meanwhile, the union also has Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) as invitee members besides others.-By Our Reporter
