GNLA militant killed

TURA, JAN 18: Meghalaya police on Monday raided the hideout of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) to hunt down alleged mastermind of Williamnagar blast – the outfit’s area commander Ajan Momin alias Jimmy.

In the early morning operation, one teenage cadre of the outfit was killed.

Police launched the operation around 5:30 am at Bangonggre village, near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.

“Based on source inputs, we launched the operation to nab the perpetrators of the Williamnagar blast. There was exchange of fire but the top cadres managed to escape. In the gun battle, a cadre was killed”, said GHP Raju, IG(operations).

The slain cadre has been identified as Chibok Ch. Marak, 18.

Police said that the GNLA cadres were spotted on a hilltop at a distance of over 800 meters. The police and Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) commandos crawled over 800 meters before they launched the attack.

Police recovered gelatin sticks, a pistol and other documents of the outfit. “The search operation is still on to nab the criminals”, Raju added.

Nine civilians were hurt in Williamnagar blast recently. Though GNLA has denied it is involved. Police are on a hunt to nab the GNLA rebels and have intensified their operation in East Garo Hills.

In the past several days, at least seven GNLA cadres were arrested from different parts of East Garo Hills and few cadres were killed.-From Our Correspondent
