Govt to provide additional fund for relief to victims of natural calamity

SHILLONG, APR 5: The state government on Thursday said additional fund will be placed with the deputy commissioners of the different districts for providing immediate relief to victims of natural calamity in the state.

“As an advance measure, government has earlier already placed Rs 20 lakh with every DC, from which they can meet immediate needs for relief. Additional fund will be placed with them, as and when required,” Revenue & Disaster Minister Kyrmen Shylla told the Assembly here.

Replying to a call attention moved by Congress MLA from Mawlai Process T Sawkmie, Shylla also informed that the department is also in touch with the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati and the North East Space Application Centre (NESAC), Umiam for weather forecast.

According to him, the information received from these institutes is shared with all the DCs for necessary action.

Referring to the recent hailstorm that hit several districts of the state, the minister said that the most severely affected districts were West Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills.

As per initial reports available with the department, a total of 237 villages and around 2500 households have been affected in these districts and particularly in the C&RD Blocks of Mawshynrut, Mairang, Laskein, Songsak, Rongjeng and Samanda.

“Assessment is still going on and these figures may change to some extent. So far there is no report of casualties or loss of life due to severe hailstorm,” he said.

Informing that an emergent meeting was also convened by the chief minister Conrad Sangma to take stock of the situation, Shylla said that immediate action was taken to extend relief and other necessary assistance to the victims of the natural calamity in the form of Gratuitous Relief, tarpaulins, CGI sheets.

Moreover, he said that the Revenue & Disaster Management department also issued instructions to all DCs and Subdivisional officers to immediately take necessary action.

The DCs and SDOs have also been asked to make detailed assessment of damage to dwelling houses, crops, horticulture crops, livestock and poultry etc and to submit reports as early as possible, he said.

Shylla further informed that district administration of affected districts have also taken action by distributing food items to more than 2500 families initially for a period of 3 days and other relief material such as tarpaulins and blankets. Some DCs are also arranging CGI sheets, as per actual requirement, he added.
