Gov’t urges to equip SDMA

SHILLONG, SEPT 26: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) today demanded immediate formation of a State Disaster Management Plan and sanctioning of post for the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

In a letter to the chief minister Mukul Sangma, who is also the chairperson of the SDMA, KHNAM state youth wing president Thomas Passah said that the SDMA do not have any employee (permanent or contractual) as per an RTI report.

The SDMA with 11 District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and no employee shows lack of seriousness of the state government in saving lives and property, he said.

According to him, taking into considerations climatic conditions and impact of natural disaster on the state, it is obvious that the SDMA has a major role to play in saving lives and property.

“Therefore, it is requested that the SDMA be supported with a set of sanctioned post which will ensure administrative efficiency of the SDMA besides generating employment to the growing unemployed youth of the state,” Passah said.

He further stated that the SDMA have also failed to come up with the State Disaster Management Plan, which is one of the basic necessities to ensure prevention, mitigation and preparedness before a disaster strikes, as per the Disaster Management Act 2005.

In view of this, Passah said that the party has sought the intervention of the chief minister to instruct the SDMA to come up with a proper State Disaster Management Plan.
