HNYF website

SHILLONG, JULY 25: The official website of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) was launched today by KHADC executive member (EM) Latiplang Kharkongor, who is also a former president of the organization.

The website at hynf.co.in aims at highlighting the objectives of the HNYF which include the Instrument of Accession (IOA) & Annexed Agreement (AA) signed between the Government of India and the 25 Khasi States in August 17, 1948.

Addressing on the occasion, Kharkongor congratulated the present leadership for being able to launch a website which make people aware about the objectives of the organization and the importance to know the history of the hynniewtrep land.

The Nongthymmai MDC, who in the past had also pushed a resolution on the IOA for discussion in the district council, said that efforts were also made to have talks with the legislators of the State Assembly on the relevance of the IOA.

“However, unfortunately many of them (MLAs) are yet to understand the importance of the IOA,” he said.

He said due to this, some of the MLAs had instead demanded the government to pass an official resolution for inclusion of Meghalaya under the special provision of Article 371 of the Indian Constitution which is not suitable for the state.

According to him, the demand should be for incorporation of the IOA & AA under a special article 370 (A) in the Constitution of India which will further protect the interest and rights of the indigenous people.

“Therefore the official website will further help the people to know what the IOA is all about and understand its importance,” Kharkongor said.

Earlier in his speech, Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya chairman John F Kharshiing said that the reason why the IOA is still relevant till today is because of the fact that the status of the traditional institutions is still not clear.

He also informed that the tribal chiefs have earlier this year expressed their bitterness on the derogatory remarks of the MHA about the traditional institutions including the dorbar shnong.

The MHA had stated – “Dorbar Shnong and other proposed institutions should be elected on the basis of adult suffrage. Non representation of other tribes and original inhabitants will be undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

In view of this, he said the IOA, which is a special treaty has clearly states that the law should be as per our customary practices, should be incorporated in the Constitution.

On the other hand, Shillong Press Club president David O Laitphlang has termed the occasion as a red letter day for the HYNF and stated that use of technology will further make the service delivery of the organization more effective.

Also present on the occasion were president of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Wellbirth Rani among other guests.
