SHILLONG, SEPT 21: Taking their fight forward for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, pro ILP ngos announced the fourth phase of agitations that includes a five-day night road-blockade and two days office picketing.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the ten ngos held at an undisclosed location on Saturday

The night road blockade will be from 8pm to 5am in the eleven districts of the state from September 23 to September 27. The office picketing will be on September 26 and 27.

FKJGP information and publicity secretary Eldie N Lyngdoh also told reporters on late Saturday evening that the road blockade will also be followed by a two days office picketing on September 26-27.

“We have decided to go ahead with our next course of action in protest against the adamant attitude of the state government towards the recommendation of the High Level Committee on Influx (HCLI) to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP),” Lyngdoh said.

Stating that there is no turning back, Lyngdoh asserted that the ngos will continue to intensify their agitations until the  demand for implementation of the ILP is achieved. He said, “Our stand remain that only the ILP is the best mechanism to tackle illegal influx.”

The ten ngos in the meeting have also made it clear that they are not bother by the legal threat given by the state government.

Referring to the threat of the government to book the ngos leaders under the MPDA, Lyngdoh shot back, “Stop threatening us, we are least bother. Implement what it has promise by constituting the committee on influx who has favour the ILP.”

Recently  the Congress led MUA-II government had rejected the demand for the implementation of the ILP in the state even as chief minister Mukul Sangma had stated, “The decision to implement the ILP is not in the state government hands but the ball is in  the Centre’s court.”

Reacting to this, Lyngdoh questioned, “If the chief minister knows that implementation of the ILP is with the centre’s court, then why did he constituted the High Level Committee on Influx.”

Quoting the chief minister that he “don’t want to fool the people”, Lyngdoh said reacted by saying, “Infact he (Mukul) is the one who is fooling the people and the ngos  by constituting the committee.”

Even as it expressed its appreciation to the people for their support and cooperation, Lyngdoh appealed to the people to continue to support the ngos  on this issue till the government is ready to implement the ILP. – By Our Reporter
