Kidnapped manager rescued, three GNLA militants arrested

Shillong, Nov 26:  MS Sawmill manager Mahesh Agarwal who was kidnapped by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on November 20 was rescued by the police even as police arrested three of the militants Monday morning. The businessman was kidnapped from Umiam by the GNLA militants.

According to sources one of the kidnappers was the GNLA area commander Haiderson Sangma who was also arrested along with two others. The arrest was made by the Ri-Bhoi police from an undisclosed location. However unconfirmed report said that while Sangma was arrested from Bolpathar village in Karbi-Anglong district in Assam the other two were arrested from West Khasi hills district.

Haiderson Sangma is based in Dimapur and brings arms consignment from the NSCN(IM) to the GNLA in Meghalaya. Besides kidnapping of Agarwal, the GNLA area commander is also said to be behind the kidnapping of the owner of a stone crusher plant at Umtyrnga in Ri-Bhoi district Dinesh Sharma in March this year.

Agarwal is a resident of Jhalupara. According to unconfirmed reports the GNLA had demanded Rs 2 crore as ransom from the Agarwal family. –By our Reporter
