KSU-SWKH to seek report

SHILLONG, FEB 14: The Khasi Students’ Union – South West Khasi Hills (KSU-SWKH) said it will soon seek a status report on the 40 kilometers Weiloi to Rangblang road project from the government before taking a final call on the issue.

“We will soon meet chief minister Mukul Sangma to seek a status report on this major road project,” KSU-SWKH general secretary Forwardman Nongrem said in a statement issued on Saturday.

He said, “The union also wanted to know the mind of the government on the project, which is a long pending aspiration of the people of the region, before deciding whether the union would continue or put an end to all its agitations on the issue.”

Stating that if the upcoming meeting with the government is not satisfactory, Nongrem r informed, “We have decided to take up the issue with the Ministry of DoNER and Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways.”

Earlier, the KSU had staged series of agitations since last year to  protest against the state government’s decision to drop the project from the region.

The 40 KM road from Weiloi to Rangblang which was projected to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 27 crore is one of the 45 projects under Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) which was dropped last year, based on the recommendation of the chief minister in the 118thmeeting of NLCPR committee.

Following their protests, the state government had submitted a revised detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of the road which is estimated to be over Rs 50 crores.

Earlier, in a meeting with the union, the PWD minister S Dhar and chief secretary PBO Warjri had informed that the dropping of the project was because the proposal that was submitted earlier has become irrelevant at present.

On this, the union leader said Nongrem welcomes the fresh DPR of Rs 50 crores submitted by the government which is now pending with the centre for approval.

“We urged the state government to ensure that the new proposal gets the necessary approval from the centre at the earliest,” Nongrem said adding one thing is clear that the union don’t want this new project to be dropped.- By Our Reporter
