KSU withdraws blockade

SHILLONG, MAY 9: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has called off the two-day night road blockade slated for May 10 and May 11 following the release of its two arrested members on bail by the court on Wednesday.

The decision was taken at the central executive committee (CEC) meeting of the KSU held Thursday evening.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem told reporters after the meeting, “We have decided to withdraw our proposed agitational programme after the Court has released our members.”

Khyriem said, “We respect the court’s decision to release them.”

On Wednesday, the court had granted bail to two of  its members  KSU Mawlai unit general secretary Johnny Lyngdoh and Demseiniong KSU unit member Teilang Nongbri  who were picked up by  the police for their alleged involvement in the vandalism incident on April 4 KSU procession in Laitumkhrah.

Responding to a query whether the KSU will put pressure on the government to withdraw the cases against its two members,  Khyriem said, “We can’t influence the court and we will not interfere the investigation or the procedure of the court.”– By Our Reporter
