‘Action against MeECL’

SHILLONG, MAR 23: Independent legislator Saleng A Sangma on Wednesday demanded the government take legal action against the erring MeECL officials and contractors following the recent tragic death of a couple due to electrocution.

While a moving a zero hour notice in the assembly, Sangma said, “FIRs should be filed against the erring officials of the MeECL and contractors for their irresponsible behavior that led to the incident.”

A pregnant woman Eldora Marak and her husband Cherik Sangma died after being electrocuted at Darong A’du village under Dalu C&RD block at around 10.15 pm on March 18.

In his reply, minister Zenith Sangma informed that a preliminary departmental inquiry into the matter was conducted by the Sub-divisional officer of Dalu Distribution Sub-Division on March 19.

“The accident was fatal and the cause is understood to be that the deceased persons came in contact with a snapped 11 KV line conductor,” he said.

Stating as required under the provisions of the sub-section (2) of section 161 of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, Sangma said, “The state government directed the senior electrical inspector to enquire or cause an enquiry into the matter and submit a detailed report thereafter.”

According to him, under the directions of the senior electrical inspector, the officers from the Zonal Inspectorate of Electricity, Tura visited the site of the accident on March 20, and gave suitable instructions to the SDO, Dalu Distribution Sub-division to facilitate submission of a detailed report in the prescribed format for further action and decision on admissibility for payment of ex-gratia grant within a period of 10 days as prescribed under the standing government orders.

Stating that the department is very much concerned about the unfortunate incident, he assured that appropriate action as admissible under the standing order after receipt of the report will be taken accordingly.-By Our Reporter
