Magisterial probe into killings by army

kharkuttaSHILLONG, NOV 28: A magisterial enquiry has been ordered to probe the killing of two civilians, whom the army allegedly claimed that they mistook’ them as militants at Kharkutta in North Garo Hills district.

The army officials did not inform the local police of the incident immediately but left the victims behind

Meghalaya Inspector General of Police ( law & order) GHP Raju informed that the North Garo hills deputy commissioner Sibi Sadhu has ordered a magisterial enquiry under Section 176 CrPC into the killings.

Additional District Magistrate (ADM) David D Sangma will head the inquiry.

Raju said that besides the magisterial enquiry police investigation is also going om side by side.

Elphius Momin (35), a teacher and a resident of New Rajasimla, and Sweetbirth D Marak alias Belbong (30) of Rajasimla were returning home on a bike on that fateful day when they were shot by army personnel allegedly from the Rongjuli camp in Assam on November 26.

Their bodies bore multiple injuries from the shooting and people later found as many as 15-20 empty shells of AK ammunition from the spot. The two were killed near Konchikol under Kharkutta outpost.

The post mortem was conducted at Mendipathar PHC by a team of 2 doctors under videography as per instructions of National Human Rights Commission.

The dead bodies were handed over to the relatives and the last rites of the deceased were conducted on November 27.

There has been hue and cry over the killing with ngos and public condemning and demanding judicial inquiry into the killings with demand for action against the erring trigger happy army officials. –By Our Reporter
