SHILLONG, MAY 7: Newly elected NPP legislator of Williamnagar constituency Marcuise N Marak today took oath of office administered by the Assembly’s deputy speaker Timothy D Shira.

The swearing in ceremony held in the Assembly Secretariat here was also attended by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, home minister James K Sangma and others.

Marcuise, who secured a total of 9558 votes, defeated his closest rival an Independent candidate Sengbath R Marak by a margin of 4860 votes in the just concluded election to the Williamnagar seat.

Conrad expressed his gratitude to the people of Williamnagar for having repose their faith in the candidature of Marcuise and giving him an opportunity to work for the people of the constituency and for also reposing faith in the NPP and the MDA government led by the party.

While speaking to reporters, Marcuise admitted that the infighting within the opposition Congress has helped him win the Williamnagar seat. “When people especially in the rural area saw the infighting, they came and supported me,” he said.

It may be noted that the former Congress MLA from the constituency Deborah C Marak came third when she secured just 4517 votes. Deborah had blamed the leaders of the party for her lost.

Asked, the newly elected Williamnagar legislator said that his main priorities would be to improve the road infrastructure, drinking water supply and upgradation of the civil hospital in the constituency.

Stating that he is also concern about insurgency in the area, he said, “I have already spoken to the chief minister and also the home minister to see that our youth are not misguided and those who have gone in the wrong direction are brought back in the right track.”

Marcuise was first elected from Williamnagar in 2008. He however said despite the then MPA government lasted for only 10 months, the constituency was able to get a government college and a polytechnic which are important institutions that have been a blessing to many youths.
