Mass resignation by NCP legislators soon

Shillong, August 21: The State’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislators, office bearers and its members will be tendering their resignation en mass to enable the formation of a “tribal centric” party led by former Lok Sabha leader PA Sangma, who had contested the presidential election as a BJP candidate.

NCP sources claimed that the “mass resignation” from the party legislators and workers might take place “tentatively by August 24.”

The decision for merging of the Meghalaya unit of the NCP with the new party to be floated by Sangma has been taken following the refusal of the central leadership of the NCP to back up Sangma, its national party general secretary, as the candidate in the just concluded presidential election that saw Congress candidate Pranab Mukherjee being elected to the highest post in the country.

Peeved at Sharad Pawar, the national president of NCP, Sangma nonetheless contested the presidential poll as a BJP candidate and lost to Mukherjee. Later he along with likeminded political leaders decided to float a political party which is “tribal centric.”

In Meghalaya, there are thirteen NCP legislators and two Members of Parliament. Sangma’s youngest daughter Agatha Sangma who is the Tura Lok Sabha MP is the union minister of state and Thomas Sangma is Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya.

However, it was not clear whether Agatha Sangma will also tender her resignation from the ministry and the NCP party. The source claims that there will be some drama so “just wait and watch.” – By Our Reporter
