Meghalaya CM orders strict action against illegal transportation of coal

SHILLONG, JAN 10: Chief Minster Conrad K Sangma has directed the state police to take action against illegal transportation of coal in the state.

The direction also came after holding a separate meeting with the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) on Friday, following allegations against illegal coal trucks plying in the state roads and highways.

“I have given complete order to the DGP to ensure if there is anything like this, action must be immediately taken and to take all measures to ensure none of this should happen,” Sangma told reporters.

He informed that the police chief had assured that necessary instructions will be passed directing all superintendents of police and concerned officials to take strict action against such illegal activities.

On the alleged illegal collection at Dainadubi in North Garo Hills, the chief minister informed that an inquiry committee has been instituted to probe into the incident.

“The committee will submit its inquiry report and based on that, we will take necessary action,” he said.

Apart from setting up an inquiry, Sangma said that immediate action was also taken by the state police.

Earlier, the youth wing of the United Democratic Party (UDP) had demanded for a judicial inquiry into the incident.

The demand also came in the wake of a furore over civilians, allegedly at the behest of a senior NPP minister, collecting money from coal trucks that were en route to Assam after sidelining the DMR and transport departments.

The incident took place on the night of December 30, last year with fingers being pointed at various persons aligned with the NPP, being responsible for the illegal act.
