Militant killed in gun battle

TURA, SEPT 9: A cadre of the newly floated rebel outfit of Meghalaya – A’chik Revolutionary Army was killed in a police encounter at Selbalgre village, near Rongram in West Garo Hills this afternoon.  A cadre of the same outfit was arrested after the gun battle between the rebels and the Meghalaya police.

“The police team exchanged fire with the militants leading to an encounter. In the exchange, one of the cadres was killed,” said Mukesh Singh, superintendent of police of West Garo Hills.

Singh said that outfit’s commander William A. Sangma, who was also taking shelter at Selbagre village and managed to escape during the exchange of bullets.

The slain cadre is yet to be identified. A 9 mm pistol, magazine, live rounds were recovered from the slain cadre. The arrested cadre has been identified as Bachan M Marak (30) of Resingpara under Rongram in West Garo Hills.

“We have launched an operation in the area to nab the militants”, the SP added. Selbalgre is about 20 km from Tura.-From Our Correspondent
