‘Mission Green’ in Garo hills

SHILLONG, JUNE 18: The second phase of afforestation drive under Mission Green in twenty villages of  Betasing block in South West Garo hills got underway with district officials joining the villagers in planting saplings in ten villages on Wednesday.

Villages where plantations were carried out on the first day include Chilipara Nokat, Belbupara, Shipragaon, Dakupara, Batajor, Baladinggre, Taktaki, Joyfar, Sagarkona and Deo Kashra with district officials from various departments, including Addl SP Anand Mishra,  EACs WRG Momin and DA Sangma taking part in the plantation with the villagers.

The plantations are being done early in the day before office hours to enable the officers as well as the villagers to go about their daily work unhindered. In a brief meeting before the plantation, the villagers were also advised by the officers to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in their respective villages. The villagers also signed a pledge to take care and sustain every tree planted by them.

The afforestation drive under Mission Green is being undertaken up by the District Basin Development Unit, Ampati, in collaboration with Social Forestry, Horticulture and other line departments.

On Thursday, the plantation drive was carried out in Malchapara, Kashra Koch, Chidekgre, Bangre, Borkona, Kashragaon, Banduraja, Jenggitchakgre, Kumligaon and Skagre villages with the involvement of district officials.

Earlier, similar plantation drives were carried out in ten villages of South West Garo hills under the initiative of the Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh during the first week of  June. This exercise will continue in the district till all the villages are covered.- By Our Reporter
