SHILLONG, JUNE 28: ‘Unity-One Crew’- a group of young dancers drawn from different north eastern states including Meghalaya, has been selected to compete at the Olympic Hip-Hop Dance Championship to be held at Las Vegas from August 8 to 13.

The 15-member group is one among the 20 dancing groups from different parts of the country which have qualified to compete at the international platform of hip-hop championship.

“We have been selected to represent the north east region and compete for the world championship title,” the group leader Abishek Mahatu told reporters on Tuesday.

Mahatu, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh and presently residing in Guwahati, informed that his group has members from all over the region. Suraj Thakur, a resident of Laitumkhrah, Shillong will also be part of the team bound to Las Vegas.

He said the selection was done after the crew entered in the just concluded Indian Hip Hop Championship organized by a Mumbai-based A-ChoreoCulture held on May this year.

The dancing crew would require approximately Rs 21 lakhs for taking part in the international event and are appealing to the state governments of NE region for financial support.    “We are taking the help of All Meghalaya Dancers Association (AMDA) to appeal to the Meghalaya government to extent financial support for our Las Vegas trip,” Mahatu said.

According to him, the Assam government, when approached recently assured assistance of Rs 5 lakh. He said that this is for the second time that the team had been invited to participate at the international event as last year the team had to call off their  trip because of no financial support.-By Our Reporter
