Police chief denies political pressure while dealing with GNLA chief

Shillong, Oct 4:  Meghalaya DGP N Ramachandran said he not under any o political pressure while dealing with the GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma who is lodged in the Shillong district jail. He justified that the militant leader has not been booked under the MPDA as there is no threat of him being released from jail.

Eyebrows have been raised on the police failure to put the militant leader under the stringent MPDA even after two months in custody. Ramachandran said, “I have not come under political pressure. Nobody from any political background have pressurized me in my entire career as a policeman”

Assuring that the police will follow Champion Sangma’s case to its logical end for his alleged involvement in fighting against the state and for perpetrating violence against the innocent people ,Ramachandran said Champion was booked under “very large number of cases”  and he has also been charge sheeted in a number of cases that can attracts life-imprisonment.

The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally in the Congress led MUA government, recently said that failure to book the militant leader under the MPDA was an indication that there is a nexus between a section of the GNLA and a segment of the Congress.

Ramachandran, however, said the police force has done a wonderful job in hunting down the GNLA. He said, “Our boys have operate under numerous constraints right from the terrains to communication but success has been substantial in the past one year.”  He also claimed that the police could have easily laid its hands on the GNLA Commander in Chief  but it restraints to prevent collateral damage.- By Our Reporter
