Protest in front of Lafarge

SHILLONG, AUG 12: Residents of Nongtrai village along members of the KSU on Friday staged a sit-in-demonstration in front of the Lafarge Umiam Pvt Ltd at Polo as a mark of protest against its alleged failure to provide jobs to local people.

Around 60 people armed with placards participated in the sit-in-protest which was organized after the company failed to give any response to the several memorandums submitted since January earlier this year.

Following this, the protestors were invited for talks by the Director of the company N Sharma. The protestors have decided to give one-week time to the company to give its decision in respect to the demands put forth by them.

“The company officials had assured us that a decision will be given in a meeting to be convened on August 19 after we have given them one-week time,” KSU-Nongtrai Circle general secretary Trulywell Lyngdoh told reporters.

The protestors have demanded the company to employ one person each from the 276 households in Nongtrai village.

He alleged that the company had failed to honour the agreement signed with the village dorbar especially with regards to ‘first preference policy’ in term of employment to local people.

“However the company has claimed that out of 547 employees most of them are local people from the area, which is not found to be true because as per our information the company had only appointed less than 80 people from the village,” he said.

He further alleged, “The Company has failed to provide job opportunities even as the village over the years has been able to produce quite a number of educated and well qualified youths.”-By Our Reporter
