Security audit in jails

SHILLONG, AUG 12: With the state registering quite a number of jailbreak cases in the past, the state government had already ordered for ‘security audit’ of all district jails in the state.

“We have ordered security audit for all our jails in the state,” Home Minister Roshan Warjri said when sought for her reaction in the wake of yet another jailbreak attempt by inmates of the Shillong District Jail on Friday.

She added, “Accordingly we are trying to implement the recommendations.”

Earlier today, police successfully foiled a bid by hardcore militants to break out of the Shillong District jail.

The militants belonging to the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council and Garo National Liberation Army and ULFA had connived to break out of jail by making ropes out of the bed sheets and these were seized.

When asked, Warjri said that the department has been directed to immediately submit a report on today’s incident. On whether any inquiry would be instituted on the issue, the minister however said that decision will be taken after receiving the report.

She also maintained that appropriate action will be taken against the inmates as per provisions of the law.-By Our Reporter
