Extortionists lynched

TURA, JUNE 19: Two extortionists were beaten to death at Rongjeng in  East Garo Hills on Friday. Rongjeng is about 45 km from Williamnagar, the district headquarter of East Garo hills. The duo were chased by villagers and lynched to death at 1 pm while they had come to the village to collect the ransom.

A group of five extortionists had surface in the village, however, when irate villagers chased them but  three of them managed to escape mob fury.

The deceased has been identified as Senstar Marak, 23 of Rongjeng and Lakingbat Marak, 23 from Gauram village, near Rongjeng. The duo was instrumental for collecting ransom from traders and wine shop owners around Rongjeng and its adjoining areas.

Police suspect they are with A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF). “Police was alerted about the lynching and when our teams rushed to the spot they found the bodies. By that time the mob had also disappeared. We have registered a case”, said Davies Marak, East Garo hills SP.

In July last year, five members of an extortion gang were lynched at Rongjeng. On Tuesday, angry crowd at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills beat up a surrendered cadre of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).- From Our Correspondent
