‘Police highhandedness’

TURA, JAN 20: The A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) has alleged that the police have harassed the villagers of Pakregittim, near Rongjeng in East Garo hills on Monday. The Meghalaya police had launched an operation yesterday to hunt the rebels, who were taking shelter in the village.

In a statement issue on Tuesday, the outfit said that the police have taken two goats from the villagers. They also alleged that the police have destroyed the utensils of the villagers. The outfit said that police were “highhandedness”.

“The shameful act was committed in the absence of the family who fled to safety after hearing the gunfire. We warn the police not to commit the same mistake in the future because they too have families of their own,” the release said.

Taking a dig at police, the outfit has challenged them for a direct gun battle.

“Just because we were at the village they should not harass the innocent villagers. This is uncalled for and unjustified. The villagers is at no fault, we are at fault”, said Jakrikra Matgrik, deputy chief of the outfit.

The outfit has warned the police that they will take revenge. “Are the police exempted from the laws of the land? How can they keep on committing such atrocities? Why are the innocent villagers being targeted time and again?” the release questioned.- From Our Correspondent
