Sanbor hits out at regional parties

SHILLONG, MAR 25: BJP leader and candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat Sanbor Shullai today hit out at the regional parties which are in complete denial of working with the party and said but they cannot “divorce” the BJP.

“This is the characteristic of the election. They (regional parties) will criticize us but finally after the elections they are bhai bhai with the BJP,” Shullai told reporters after filing his nomination papers here on Monday.

He said the parties which are saying that they will not work with the BJP during the last year’s Assembly polls, are in fact still working with the party in the state.

The BJP is one of the six coalition partners in the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.

“They are still working with us as they know that they cannot divorce the BJP because if the BJP is not there, there will be lots of financial problems,” Shullai further stated.

Asked that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had pulled out of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the BJP leader however said, “That is not our concern but we are talking about the state where we are still working together (as coalition partners).”

Whether he feels that the UDP should not have put up candidate, he said it depends because the BJP is a national party and “we abide by the party’s directive.”

He also expressed confidence that the voters of the Shillong constituency will vote for the BJP as they are wise enough (to make right decision).

With the Shillong seat being a strong bastion of the opposition Congress, Shullai however said that now that the BJP is existing here (in the state), people should vote for the party as it will be forming the government in Delhi.

“Vote for us here then only your issues which have been pending for many years will be taken up and solve in the right time,” he said.
