State writes to centre on scholarship delay

SHILLONG, JUNE 14: With the post matric students, especially those belonging to poor economic background, struggling to meet their monetary obligation to carry on their studies, the state government has reportedly moved the union government to release the pending  Rs 28.69 crore at the earliest.

Eight letters have reportedly been sent to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MTA) both from the chief minister, deputy chief minister in-charge education and also by the state education department on the issue, , a senior government official informed.

The union ministry had released only the scholarship for the year 2015-16 despite the assurances made by the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram to release the for that the pending amount for 2014-15 financial year will also be released.

A Khasi Students Union (KSU) delegation has also met Oram who told them that funds have already been sanctioned for disbursing the scholarship – 2014-15 and 2015-16.

A notice issued by the Director of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) informed that the centre is yet to release the 2nd installment amounting to Rs 28,69,69,044 (2014-15).

Earlier, the 1st installment amounting to Rs 4, 38,00,000 sanctioned by the centre was already released by the state government to the students.

The official acknowledged that the delay in the releasing of the scholarship has affected the students’ community in the state. He, however, informed that the government is struggling and fighting hard to ensure the release of the pending scholarship.

“The proposal is being process and it is under consideration by the ministry,” he assured.

The official said the union government had released the scholarship for 2015-16 amounting to Rs 32,74,61,000 and the state government has already started releasing the scholarship on a day to day basis to the students.-By Our Reporter
