Shira files nomination for dy speaker’s post

SHILLONG, MAR 19: Ruling NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition’s nominee Timothy Shira and opposition Congress candidate David A Nongrum today filed their nominations for the post of the Assembly’s deputy speaker.

Election for the deputy speaker’s post is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

Shira (68) is the senior-most member of the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Assembly’s commissioner and secretary Andrew Simons informed that Shira’s name was proposed by MLA Jim M Sangma and seconded by MLA Rakkam A Sangma.

The name of Nongrum was however proposed by Dikkanchi D Shira and seconded by Himalaya Shangpliang, he said.

The ruling coalition has 36 members, which include the NPP (19), UDP (6), PDF (4), HSPDP (2), BJP (2), NCP (1) and two Independents — Samuel M. Sangma and Lambor Malngiang, while the opposition Congress is with a strength of only 20 members.

Meanwhile, lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator Adelbert Nongrum and Independent MLA from Mawphlang SK Sunn are neither supporting the ruling nor the opposition side.
