Ensure good roads, public order in Puja & X-Mas

SHILLONG, SEPT 16: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai directed the Public Work Department (PWD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to ensure that the repairing and restoration work of the roads across the city is taken up at the earliest before the commencement of the Puja and Christmas celebration.

Shullai on Monday convened a meeting with different departments including PWD, PHE, Urban Affairs, MeECL and police department which was also attended by heads of several localities under South Shillong constituency and religious leaders from different denomination at MLA hostel.

Shullai informed that the meeting also resolved to request the police department to strengthen security as well as traffic arrangement in and around the city.

“I have asked the PWD, PHE and Urban Affairs department to complete all repairing and restoration of the roads in the capital city including in South Shillong constituency before the commencement of the Puja festival scheduled to be held on October 10 next, as well as the upcoming Christmas celebration,” Shullai told reporters after a meeting.

During the meeting, Rangbah Shnongs from different localities under Laban area have expressed their concern over the dilapidated condition of the roads in the area which was left unattended by the Public Work Department (PWD) causing huge inconveniences to the public. Besides, they have also pointed out on the lethargic and erratic work by the PHE department.

“The department has on many occasions dug the roads for laying of water pipes but has failed to restore back the road which is hazardous to public safety,” a headman from Laban stated.

The officials from PHE and PWD assured the meeting that the matter will be taken up at the earliest.

Shullai also informed that the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) was also directed to ensure that there is no interruption in the power supply during festive seasons.-By Our Reporter
