Drivers to self-regulate

SHILLONG, FEB 17: To control the traffic snarls in Shillong, the city’s traffic police have started drivers’ ‘self-regulating” in the ‘no entry”, “one way” and “no parking” zones across the city which will not be manned by the traffic police. The drivers are expected to follow the traffic regulating to the “T” by themselves.

However, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang informed that the traffic police will parked themselves inside the “no entry”, “one-way” and “no parking” zone and those who violates the traffic rules will immediately be caught.

“We have already started implementation of this new approach called as ‘self-regulating’ in and around the city,” Kharkrang told reporters on Tuesday. According to him, the approach is to teach and educate the drivers not to violate the traffic rules.

By putting this in place, Kharkrang said people and drivers must adopt this self regulating approach by ensuring that they do not violate the many no-entries, one-ways and no-parking. He informed that the police department has decided not to deploy traffic personnel to man these areas designated as no-entries, no-parking and one-ways.

But  Kharkrang said instead these traffic personnel will be deployed right inside the prohibited areas and this will ensure that such violators do not get to skip the law adding  “Violators will get caught easily and fined as per provision of the law.”

Police have detained hundreds of vehicles including those belonging to government for violating traffic rules in common city junction Barik. The step was taken to prevent fatal accidents which often occured in the past.

Kharkhrang informed that last year, police department have realized Rs 49 lakhs from a total of 14110 cases of traffic violation in and around the city.  Till January this year alone, so far 851 cases of traffic violation have been detected and Rs 3.14 lakhs was realized as fine.- By Our Reporter
