Truckload of timbers seized

SHILLONG, NOV 18: The office of the District Forest Officer of East Khasi hills seized a truck carrying illegally felled timber from Klew village, Ri Bhoi district. Initially the people of the village prevented the official from seizing timber saying that Forest rules are not applicable to private forest in Meghalaya.

However, later the officials convinced the villager about statutory acts and rules to protect private and community forests in the state for the benefit of the people.

Permission for felling trees even in private and community land have to be obtained from forest department in accordance with approved working scheme.  Supreme Court has also banned felling of trees in the state without approval.
