SHILLONG, FEB 19: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) is gearing for the MDC bye-elections to the Nongkrem and Sohiong which fell vacant following the resignations of the former KHADC CEM, Ardent M Basaiawmoit, also the chief of the HSPDP, and  Council Affairs minister HDR Lyngdoh.

The two including for other MDCs resigned following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly, Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015 by the Congress led state government

UDP leaders on Friday came down heavily on the state government for passing what they called the anti-dual post act which they felt was ‘just to waste the time and energy’ of political parties and the people of the state.

The hurriedly passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly, Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015 will be taken up as one of agendas by the UDP for the forthcoming bye-elections to the district councils.

“The passing of the Act was just to waste the time and energy of the people and also political parties,” UDP East Khasi Hills District president Titoswell Chyne told reporters after a general council meeting on Friday.

Lambasting the failure of the government to make the Act effective, Chyne, also an MLA from Sohra said, “It (govt) has totally failed as one of the MLAs is yet to resign from the dual post even after the act has been passed.”

Two UDP legislators – Metbah Lyngdoh (Mairang) and Brolding Nongsiej (Mawthadraishan) along with four others resigned as members of KHADC following the passing of the anti-dual post act.

According to him, the party would definitely take up this issue as an election agenda for the upcoming bye-elections.

Apart from this, he informed issues related to the state government’s interference with the issue related to the traditional institutions, which is the subject matter of the district council, will also be taken up by the party.

“Instead of strengthening the district council, the action of the government is otherwise,” Chyne said.

“We have directed the circles to propose the names of the candidates for the two seats,” Chyne said. Expressing confident that party would win both the seats, he claimed that the candidates who are vying for the party ticket have good chances in the bye-elections.

Only from Sohiong constituency, the UDP has received as many as six applicants who aspire to contest the election from the party ticket.

Earlier there were reports indicating that the former KHADC chief HS Shylla is all set to contest the bye-election in Nongkrem constituency from the UDP party. But this was denied by Chyne as he said the party has not receive any official communication from Shylla so far.- By Our Reporter
