SHILLONG, MAY 12: In less than a month’s around 20 fashion designers and weavers will head to Itanagar for the second edition of North East India Fashion Week (NEIFW) and among them will be Meghalaya’s exciting creative talent Rupert Wanlambok Lynrah.

The organiser of the June 3-5 event is Affluent Ray of Light (ARL), a non-profit body dedicated to empowering designers, weavers and models from the North East. In the run-up to the main event promotional shows have been held, most recently in Guwahati last Sunday at Terra Mayaa, which saw the participation of 13 young designers who believe in showcasing their traditional fabric and patterns and have successfully carved a niche for themselves’ in the fashion industry.

Rupert W Lynrah, who showcased his designs at the promo show, said, “NEIFW gives us designers a platform to foray into the competitive field of fashion design by showcasing our creativity and talent. Having said that, it is not just the designers, but also the weavers, artisans, entrepreneurs and buyers who get a chance to gather under one roof and find potential business opportunities.”

ARL’s mission is to promote and preserve indigenous textiles in today’s world and Lynrah’s designs reflect this, marrying a modern touch with traditional designs and featuring the use of local Ryndia silk.

Lynrah has been in the fashion business for the past 12 years, but counts his near seven-year stint at retailer Splash in Dubai as a “turning point” and three years ago he took the plunge and launched his own fashion label, RwL Designs in Shillong.

His collections at NEIFW represent his ethnic identity and outlook, as he explained in his own words: “It’s a collection where East meets West. I have tried to bridge the gap between the traditional and modern, thus creating a hybrid that fits for all. It’s like taking your tradition and embellishing it to give it a modern identity. I want my designs to be worn by everyone and for everyone to be able to relate to it.”-By Our Reporter
