UDP says need to defeat 3 C’s

IMG_0339SHILLONG, FEB 6: United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and sitting legislator from West Shillong Paul Lyngdoh today said that the 3 C’s – criminalization of politics, cash power and cartelization of politics – will be defeated after the coming polls.

Exuding confidence while speaking to reporters after filing his nominations here, Lyngdoh said that he is not fighting against individuals but against the 3 C’s – criminalization of politics, cash power and cartelization of politics.

“It is these three that we are going to defeat on March 3 (counting day) because these are the immediate dangers when you have business sharks trying to capture political power,” he said.

He said that business sharks will always try to concentrate on their own business empire and that will be at the cost of the people of the state.

“When their business interest comes into conflict with interest of the people of Meghalaya they will obviously prefer to safeguard their own business interest so the interest of Meghalaya will be in great danger,” Lyngdoh added.

Asked how will one reverse this trend, the UDP leader said that time has come for religious bodies, for the churches to come out more vigorously against this trend which is going to halt the development of Meghalaya.

According to him, this trend is also going to ensure that participatory democracy will be diluted because the biggest participants will be only those who have a share in the pie.

On the expectation from businessmen in the Assembly, Lyngdoh said that this is a wake up call for the people of Meghalaya if they want a functioning, effective and delivery oriented government.

“It is time that we choose candidates on the basis of three E’s – experience, education and ethics and once we do that the rest will take care of itself,” he stated.

But no campaign is visible in this aspect, Lyngdoh however said, “I have done it where I have defeated a major business empire in the past and we are going to do it again to prove our point.”

Reacting to a query, the sitting MLA said that a person contesting election needs to have –education, experience and ethics and when that person lacks all these qualities then what kind of competition does he have.

“I am confident that the people of the constituency will repose their faith in me once again. Now my only concern is to figure out what would be the margin of our victory,” he said.

However, recently Congress nominee Mohendro Rapsang had claimed that he would defeat the Lyngdoh by a margin of over 3,000 votes during the upcoming February 27-Assembly polls.

Rubbishing the claim, UDP leader said that even candidates who forfeit their security deposit will also claim that they are winning.

“I am not claiming that I am winning but this I know for sure I don’t even have a worthy opponent because when I speak of a worthy opponent I speak of somebody who has experience, education and ethics,” he said.

It may be mentioned Lyngdoh defeated Rapsang in the last 2013 election by a thin margin of only 481 votes.

Further boasting on his prospect, the sitting MLA said, “Winning is a foregone conclusion you can see for yourself you can feel it in the air we are winning the seat and it is just a matter of margins which you and I can bet on the figures.”

Meanwhile spelling out its priorities, Lyngdoh said that it will be three E’s – economy, education and environment. “These are the three concerns that I would like to take up very seriously in the next term,” he added.
