SHILLONG, APR 26:  The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement-  Youth Wing ((KHNAM-YW) on Tuesday said that the report of the 700 samples of water tested have only said that the water supplied to the residents of Shillong is ‘satisfactory’ without indicating that it is fit for human consumption.

To buttresses their argument, KHNAM-YW quoted the reports obtained from the King Edward VII Memorial Pasteur Institute and Medical Research Institute through an RTI wherein over 700 water samples were sent by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department from April 2015 till now and all the report only said it was ‘satisfactory’.

Taking up the cudgel for clean and healthy drinking water, KHNAM YW president Thomas Passah told reporters, “It is quite surprising as out of the 700 odd water samples there is no indication that the quality of water is fit for consumption.”  He informed that only the word “satisfactory” was indicated in about 500 reports and felt that the word ‘satisfactory’ is a strong indicator that the quality of water is not up the mark.

“Though reports suggested that the pH value ranging 6.5, 6.6, 8.4 and 8.5, there is no indication that water being supplied is not free from bacteria content,” he added.

Passah also said that 29 and 27 testing reports on quality of water supplied by the Municipal Board from Wahrisa and Umjasai indicated that the ‘water is unsatisfactory for human consumption’.

Passah quoted the chief minister concern over the issue, but termed the statement of deputy chief minister RC Laloo, who had claimed that water is fit for drinking, a “blatant lie.”

KHNAM YW has now turn to Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and informed that they have submitted the reports on the quality of water to the minister for her intervention who in turn assured of convening a meeting on May 2,” he said.

Passah said the meeting will be attended by officials and experts from the PHE and Pasteur Institute. –By Our Reporter
