Wellington FC coach says team will be happy to nurture NE football talents

Shillong, August 28: New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix Football Club (WPFC) coach Ricki Herbert said that he and his team will be very happy if they can contribute to the development of young football talent in the region.

Speaking to reporters at the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) office, Herbert said, “It will be a great achievement if we could contribute in nurturing the young football talents in the north east.”   He said the club wants to have a long relation with this “part of India”.

Wellington Phoenix FC is participating in the Northeast Lajong Super Series.

Herbert said that this series is north east India is a part of the preparation for participation in the A-League organized by Football Federation of Australia.

Wellington Phoenix FC will be playing friendly match Wednesday against Shillong premier league winners Royal Wahingdoh FC.
Ricki informed that his team now is a blend of senior and some young club’s academy players and this exposure trip is going to help their young players to develop into mature players.

Royal Wahingdoh FC coach Carlton Chapman, on the other hand,  said the match with Wellington Phoenix FC will come in handy as the club is preparing for federation cup”. The Shillong based club will be fielding its Brazilian recruit Ennio Silva, who will be playing for the first time for the team.

Wellington will next clash in the finals of the series on September 1 against the winners of Thursdays match between Shillong Lajong FC and United Sikkim FC.

Earlier at Imphal Wellington had beat Shillong Lajong and United Sikkim.- By Our Reporter
