KSU, FKJGP locks chief engineer’s office

Shillong, August 28: As the government refused to act on their demand the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) locked the office of the State Sports Council Chief Engineer W Kharmalki Tuesday. The two ngos had taken umbrage at the government for giving extension to Kharmalki after his retirement. Their contention’s was that the post should be filled up by another officia and ensure upward movement of the officials of the department so that there is a vacancy at the lower level that can be filled up by competent youths who are unemployed.KSU general secretary Augusten Jyrwa told Oh!Meghalaya that  the two ngos were asked to wait for sometime during their meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Sports and Youth Affairs Bindo Lanong but a whole week passed without any step being taken to remove Kharmalki.

He justified the ngos step of locking the office of the Chief Engineer saying that granting extension to a retired person is detrimental to the promotion prospects of others down the line as well as it affects the morale of the  employees as well as block employment opportunities for thousands of prospective unemployed youths.

Jyrwa said,  “We would urge those who are retired to make way for others to fill their post especially the younger ones as there are lots of jobless youths.” By Our Reporter
