Sit-in demonstration of ngos for implementation of ILP

Shillong, August 28: Pursuing and pressuring their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, ten ngos have decided to hold a one-day sit in demonstration on September 3.

The demonstration will be held in the parking lot of the state secretariat from 11am to 4 pm on September 3.

The ten ngos– KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, RBYF, JYF, JSU, CSWO, KWADA and others- took a decision after a meeting that was held  to discuss the increased inflow of illegal immigrants into the state posing a serious threat to the indigenous people of the state.

The sit in protest will be the first step for conveying to the government the immediate need of having a proper mechanism to check and control the inflow of illegal immigrants into the state.

FKJGP working president Joe Marwein said, “We demand that state government implement the ILP in the state at the earliest.” He feels that if the ILP in place it will help in controlling the influx of illegal immigrants into the state.

Mawein was of the opinion that the increase inflow of illegal immigrants into the state is seriously affecting the state and its people as Meghalaya is the only state where illegal immigrants find it too easy to enter due to lack of proper mechanism for their detection.  He said “if the influx remains uncheck, it will be difficult to tackle later”.

Appealing to the legislators to take up the implementation of the IPL in the state Marwein called upon traditional bodies and public to extent their support on the implementation of the ILP by taking part in the September 3 sit-in-demonstration. – By Our Reporter
