Woman shot for ‘witchcraft’

TURA, JAN 3: Meghalaya police informed that a woman was allegedly shot on her left feet by armed miscreants on accusation of practicing witchcraft in remote villages of North Garo hills.The armed miscreants entered Bansingre village, near Bajengdoba about 70 km from Tura on December 31 and attacked her.

The incident took place around 1 am.

The woman identified as Tepilesh Marak, 50 has been accused of practising ‘witchcraft’ along with her husband Fedrik Sangma, 54 to treat patients suffering for various ailments. Police said that the woman was warned and shot as it is accused that her practice led to death of many in several villages of North Garo Hills.

Police said that two unidentified persons with pistol visited the woman on December 31.

Her husband, who was also present at the house, ran for his life seeing the armed men were searching for them. He reached the Bajengdoba police station and alerted the police.

One Singtom Marak, 54 was also assaulted on the same night in the village for helping the woman’s husband escape.  Police have registered a case on the incident and investigation is on.
