FIR against ex-minister

SHILLONG, AUG 11: The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) filed an FIR against a former Arunachal Pradesh minister  L Wanglat who is also a member of the Shillong Golf Club (SGC) for allegedly using abusive languages against women security of the club.

In the FIR filed in Pasteur police beat house on Sunday CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said,  “We urge the police to book the person as per law so that nobody can degrade and abuse any woman in her workplace.”

Kharshiing said, “This is an outrage to the modesty of women in their workplace which cannot be tolerated by a civilized society and as an ngo working for the interest of women we find the act highly condemnable.”

The FIR said Wanglat  alleged abused one Stela Kharsyntiew, who is a woman security at the Shillong Golf Club on July 19. Wanglat had degradingly called Kharsyntiew, “Hey stupid come here”.

Kharshiing said, “This is a direct insult to the women of the society, especially the women of Meghalaya who are held in high esteem.”  She said during her interaction with the women security of Shillong Golf Club  they complained that they have been often discriminated, and scolded with degrading and abusive words like bastard, stupid, nonsense, bullshit, idiot by  Wanglat. She said, “This is extremely degrading for the women of our society who are trying to earn and make a living in a decent manner.”

Kharshiing further informed that the women security had earlier informed the director, of the Shillong Golf Club. But the director had mentioned that Wanglat is an influential member of the club and an ex home minister of Arunachal Pradesh, and if there was a complaint against him they may lose their job.

So for fear of losing their jobs they kept quiet and suffered the abuse in silence, Kharshiing said. The incident was also reported to the Meghalaya health minister AL Hek by the women security of the Shillong Golf Club on July 19.- By Our Reporter
