GNLA kidnaps sawmill manager from Umiam

Shillong, Nov 20: Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants kidnapped thirty eight years old Mahesh Agarwal, manager of sawmill and also son of a prominent businessman of the state, from Umiam in Ri-Bhoi district.

Police sources informed that the kidnapping took place on Monday evening. It is learnt that around five GNLA militants went to the sawmill and asked the Agarwal to accompany them to the nearby bazaar. As it was evening, Agarwal also thought of taking a walk to the nearby bazaar with the five men.

However on reaching the bazaar, police said, the five men took out guns and pointing it at Agarwal ask him to get inside a waiting vehicle. The thirty-eight years old businessman had no option but to obey the militants and gets into the waiting vehicle quietly without raising an alarm.

Later the Umiam police station was informed about the kidnapping of Agarwal by his relatives. Police immediately launched a search operation, but by that time the kidnappers must have covered a good distance from the place of kidnapping.

Police suspects that the entire kidnapping episode was an offshoot of the refusal of the Agarwals’ to oblige the GNLA with the money they demanded earlier. – By Our Reporter
