SHILLONG, AUG 30: Officials of the various departments on Tuesday assured to take quick action on issues relating to drug trafficking, street lighting, repairing of roads, traffic jams and other affecting the public and the society.

The assurances were made before the state assembly’s Committee on Subordinate Legislation (CSL) headed by former deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai at a meeting held on Tuesday.

The CSL summoned officials of different departments and boards – PWD, PHE, Transport, Urban Affairs, Police, MeECL, Shillong Municipal Board and Cantonment Board. SPs in-charge crime and traffic also attended the meeting.

Apart from officials, members of various dorbar shnongs and ngos also attended the meeting.

According to the Shullai, various issues were raised during the meeting based on the grievances and complaints received from the public including students.

Stating the issue of drug trafficking was taken up and various suggestions have been given on this regard, Shullai said that the dorbar shnongs and ngos have also said it will extend full cooperation to the police in tackling the issue.

It was also suggested that the department concern hold regular meetings with dorbar shnongs to ensure that issues relating to crimes, drug trafficking, and theft are properly addressed.

“Police on their part have suggested the need to have regular awareness programme pocket-wise and requested the dorbar shnongs to help in organizing such programme,” he informed.

On poor functioning of streetlights in various parts of the city, the committee chairman said that the MeECL have assured that they would in 15 days’ time replace the ‘tubelights’ with ‘CFL bulbs’ for better lightings.

He however informed that strong warning was also issued to the MeECL to ensure that if it is paying the supplier with the rate of quality A, the materials supplied should also be of good quality.

Informing that the SMB has assured to address the issue of stray dogs, Shullai said, “It has also assured to come up with new strategy to ensure the city is clean and throwing of garbage in the streets is put to stop.”

Stating that the traffic police have assured to improve the traffic regulation in and around the city, he said there were also complaints received about local taxis outrightly refusing to ferry passengers, which is against a provision in the permit issued by the government.

“It is time people register their complaints against such erring local cabbies by noting down their registration number and action will be taken to the extent of cancelling their permit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PWD department has assured the committee to start the repairing of the dilapidated roads in Greater Shillong within 20 days on condition that the weather permits

On the other hand MUDA which was asked to improve the drainage system has assured to take action within 15 days, while informing that many schemes sanctioned by the centre will also be taken up once funds are released.

When asked, Shullai, who admitted that drug addiction and drug trafficking is a matter of serious concern, said that the committee will summon the concerned departments including Social Welfare in its next sitting.

The state for the past nine years has failed to come up with a proper statistic on the population of drug users. The last survey on the subject had indicated there were around 17, 000 drug users in the state.-By Our Reporter
