MES worker union holds dharna, submits memo to defence minister

Shillong, Sept 28: Agitating members of Meghalaya unit of the Military Engineering Service (MES) Civilian Workers Union (MES-CWU) Friday submitted 328 point charter of demands to the union defence minister AK Anthony through their head of establishment.

The union members also held a day long dharna before the MES office at near Nongrim hills Friday.

The charter of demands includes stopping privatization of defence production in all related activities like research and development, services and maintenance. The union members also demanded, stopping all type of outsourcing and contract in the defence establishments.

The union opposed the introduction of FDI in the defence production. Regarding the employees benefit it demanded to regularizing all contract, casual and daily wages workers who are engaged in the permanent and perennial jobs and urged the defence ministry to restore and also fill up all the posting lying vacant that were abolished between 2001 and 2009.

The charter of demands included scraping of the  new pension scheme. Payment of time wages to piece workers of Ordnance Factories for the period between normal working hours and 48 hours in a week and whenever the piece workesr work on holiday and Sunday.

It also demanded granting of 30 days EL to the individual workers of ordnance factories who have opted for leave under the factories act of 1948.

Lastly the union demanded scraping the adverse recommendations of the Professor Rama Rao Committee against DRDS and immediate payment of 20% incentives to the DRDO employees without further delay. – By Our Reporter
