Shillong, Oct 30: Thirty seven vehicles were clamped for violating traffic rules and Rs.17,900 was collected as a fine in the city Tuesday, which is the first day of the introduction of the new device for dealing with traffic violators in Shillong.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said, “37 vehicles were clamped and Rs 17,900 was realized as fine within Laitumkhrah and Sadar area.”

The clamping device was introduced by the state traffic police as a new way of tackling the menace of “illegal parking” in and around the city.

According to police, illegal parking of vehicles and traffic violations has been the root cause for “unnecessary” traffic jams in the narrow roads of the city causing public inconveniences.

During the last nine months, around 12, 457 cases of traffic violations were detected and a sum of Rs 54, 60, 650, 00 was collected as fines. –By Our Reporter
